What you give is what you get in return. The more you give, the more you get. When you give everything of yourself and do something exceptionally well and you really go the extra mile, you will be sure to get great results. Everything is proportionate. If you take on a task and you do it haphazardly, you will get equivalent results. There are so many examples of this in our wonderful world of selling (and with just life) that make this “law” so true.
When I supported my sales team, I always went above and beyond. I would often think about a member of my team who might use some help or some guidance and I would dive right in. I would call them up and get right into their world and what they were working on. Anything they needed, they got, and got it right away. My full attention was on them and I became completely focused on helping them to the best of my abilities. If I had to chase down some internal follow-up item, or lend a hand with creating a slide presentation, or help them prep for a meeting, I was right by their side and 110% focused on going above and beyond with helping them. There was never a task too small or too big for me to not be able to help out with.
I remember one time helping a salesperson build a beautifully organized slide presentation for an upcoming meeting that I could kind of tell that he was overwhelmed with. Two heads are better than one. We talked through the format for the meeting, agreed on the topics and flow, and spent nearly the whole day creating a slide deck that was top-notch. We were proud of it. We teamed up that day, put our heads together, and worked side by side until it was just right. I gave that salesperson everything I had that day and the results showed. The salesperson loved the deck and he felt very confident about it and presenting it to the customer. He was also very thankful for my assistance throughout the day and for breaking down what seemed like a big task at hand, to one that wasn’t so bad after all.
Now imagine if I only gave it my 50% effort. Maybe I called the rep, gave a few suggestions, and then told him that I would check in with him later in the day. The difference- the rep is feeling on his own, maybe lost, maybe he doesn’t get the slide deck that he really set out to create. As a result, he isn’t feeling too good about it and when he goes into that customer presentation, he doesn’t feel as prepared and misses the mark. Something else also happens in his mind. He might start to think that he works for a boss, for a company, that is just “okay.” He didn’t get all the attention and care that tells him how much his manager believes in him and his importance with his role and his upcoming client meeting. All of this builds over time and can cause poor results, frequent turnover, and goals that are never reached.
You have to give all of yourself, to get everything you want. You go above and beyond with 110% effort and take on something with all of your heart and mind. You will get exactly that in return- amazing results and success. This is a law. If you don’t do something exceptionally well, your results will be far from exceptional. Extraordinary comes from doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. So with that my friends, whatever it is that you are doing or about to take on, or even with just helping someone with something right now, do it with 110% effort and give it your very best. Watch what happens to your results!
